Children’s Ambulatory Pavilion is our top priority, bringing better care to more children.

The child health program at the University of Miami and the Holtz Children's Hospital at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital is one of the premier programs in the United States. Holtz was recently recognized on the US News and World Report Best Children's Hospital list, and the faculty of the University of Miami are nationally and internationally recognized for leadership in cardiology, neonatology, nephrology, HIV, cancer, sickle cell, and neurodevelopment. An integrated child health outpatient facility (Children's Ambulatory Pavilion-CAP) will provide primary and specialty care for the children who reside in Miami-Dade County and South Florida, as well as highly technical, high acuity care with outstanding outcomes that is not available in other regional or state centers. The CAP is considered to be the first phase of a 2-phase project, with the second phase involving the construction of an inpatient children's tower.

There are four primary reasons for initiating this project:

  • Consolidate existing outpatient child health clinical programs and high risk obstetrical programs into a single center that will facilitate comprehensive, integrated, multi-disciplinary, family-centered care.
  • Provide an outpatient health care environment that will keep UM/Holtz child health competitive with other programs that are neither safety net nor high acuity programs.
  • Establish new services that improve care, offer convenience to families and referring physicians, and serve as financial drivers of growth and sustainability.
  • Consolidate administrative and clinical program support for the Children's Medical Services (Florida Department of Health) programs in Miami-Dade County.

The CAP will be constructed on the current site of the Elliott Building, immediately north of and adjacent to the Ryder Trauma Center. Construction, from the point of initial planning to opening the doors for operation, is anticipated to take 24-30 months.

The CAP will be an approximately 150,000 ft2 building, with a full construction cost of approximately $64M with an additional $16M for equipment, for an anticipated total cost of $80M.
