Why we get involved. The Martinez family finds inspiration through seeing results. Mariana Martinez, Platinum Seraphim, Golden Angel Society Inspired by the results of their generosity, the Martinez family was instrumental in the founding of Jackson Memorial Foundation's International Kids Fund and IKF Wonderfund. Mariana currently is Chairman of its board of directors. The story of their vacation in the Dominican Republic is a heartening picture of why we get involved. The Martinez family's Dominican driver told the couple about his own family, explaining that his two sons had a rare and highly debilitating genetic skin condition. While no treatment was available in his home country, he knew it existed because of a serendipitous meeting he had with Dr. Lawrence A. Schachner from the University of Miami School of Medicine's Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery. Although options existed, the father's dream of sending his sons to the United States to receive treatment was little more than a dream. Upon her return to Miami, Mariana dedicated her time and attention to helping the family in need. While she encountered bureaucratic hurdles, she finally obtained visas for the family, and the boys came to Jackson Memorial Medical Center with their mother. The Martinez family paid all the hospital and travel expenses, and Dr. Schachner donated his medical services and expertise. The boys returned to the Dominican Republic where their skin improved remarkably, and thanks to a continuous supply of medicine sent by Mariana, their condition continued to improve. More recently, their grandmother, who lives in Broward County, legally adopted the boys. In addition to their work at Jackson, the Martinez family spearheaded a partnership with St. Thomas University, and funded the creation of a vocational school in Haiti. In 2001, the University gave Emilio an honorary Doctor of Human Letters degree in recognition of his dedication. | Mariana Martinez, Chair, International Kids Fund |
